Cultivation & Care
Family: Marantaceae (the arrowroot or "prayer plant" family).
Growth style/Plant Type: A rhizomatous, clump-forming evergreen perennial known for its erect-to-spreading habit and striking variegated foliage that folds up slightly at night.
Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. Harsh, direct sun burns the variegated leaves, while too little light causes them to lose their vibrant pink and cream coloring.
Water: Consistently moist but well-drained. Water when the top 2–3 centimetres of soil feel dry, and avoid letting the roots sit in stagnant water to prevent root rot.
Soil: A well-aerated, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture but drains freely, typically amended with perlite and orchid bark.
Humidity/Temperature: Requires high humidity (above 50–60%) and warm temperatures between 18°C and 27°C. It is highly sensitive to cold drafts, sudden temperature drops, and dry air, which cause brown leaf edges.
