Originating from east-Asia, this stunning plant produces fans of iris-like foliage with petite, star-shaped orange & crimson freckled flowers.
While it performs beautifully in the garden as a water-wise and heat-hardy border feature, its compact roots also make it a gorgeous choice for outdoor pots and sunny patios.
Cultivation & Care
  • Growth style: A clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial growing approx. 60 cm tall. It spreads gently through underground rhizomes and self-seeding.
  • Light: Requires full sun to partial shade. It performs best in open, sunny positions to ensure maximum floral displays.
  • Water: Low to moderate water requirements. It is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it exceptionally well-suited for water-wise gardening across South Africa.
  • Soil: Must be grown in well-draining soil. It thrives in sandy, loamy, or gravelly mixes.
  • Humidity/Temperature: Highly tolerant of hot, dry South African summers but equally resilient against winter frosts. It will naturally die back during freezing Highveld winters and reliably shoot up again in spring.
  • Plant Size: This listing is for a single, well established live specimen of approx. 25cm-40cm. (2l grow bag equivalent)

The plants pictured represent our actual stock and are intended for illustrative purposes.
Due to the unique nature of each live plant, individual plants supplied may vary slightly in size, shape, and color distribution.
To minimise the risk of damage to the plant during shipping, all plants are meticulously packaged in protective packaging, wrapped in moisture retaining medium where appropriate and shipped bare rooted (without pots and soil) unless otherwise stated.
