Originating from parent species native to tropical West Africa, this vigorous twining climber boasts deep green foliage and cascading clusters of fiery red petals emerging from rich, rosy-purple calyces. These rich, nectar filled blooms are a magnet for sunbirds and butterflies!

This striking hybrid is not readily available in standard retail nurseries, making it a highly sought-after addition for collectors and garden enthusiasts alike.

Plant it outdoors against a sunny trellis or enjoy it as an elegant, eye-catching houseplant.

Unlike standard cuttings, these established root divisions share the maturity of the mother plant, skipping the lengthy 2 to 3 year juvenile phase with blooms to be expected in the first growing season!

Cultivation & Care

• Family: Lamiaceae (formerly classified under Verbenaceae)
• Growth style/Plant Type: Woody, twining evergreen climber /sprawling shrub that can grow up to 3 meters in height.
• Light: Thrives in full morning sun to partial shade. In exceptionally hot South African summer regions, provide light afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch. If kept indoors, place in a spot receiving bright, indirect or filtered light.
• Water: Maintain consistently moist but well-drained soil during the active spring and summer growing seasons. Substantially reduce watering intervals during the quiet winter months to prevent root rot.
• Soil: Prefers rich, fertile, compost-enriched soils that retain moisture well while offering sharp drainage. It adapts seamlessly to acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline sandy loams and organic potting mixes.
• Humidity/Temperature: Thrives in warm, highly humid conditions. It is frost-tender and will shed its leaves if exposed to cold drafts or temperatures dropping below 10°C to 12°C. In frost-prone interior areas of South Africa (such as parts of Gauteng or the Highveld), it must be grown in containers and moved indoors or into a greenhouse for protection over winter.
